Persuasion by The Pint

This weekly podcast was born out of two things we enjoy – talking about influence & persuasion and drinking really good beer (sorry, we don’t consider Budweiser & Miller Lite good beer). We also enjoy a good whiskey on occasion.

This week, I welcome Gabe Priyev, founder and CEO of IncentFit a company that pays people to exercise. The funds come from employers or health insurance companies and they do all the administration of the benefits.

It's essentially gym reimbursements on steroids.

Gabe bootstrapped this new startup just 3 years ago, and it is now a profitable and growing business.

After studying Industrial Engineering & Operations Research at UC Berkeley, he went on to consult for several companies including Boston Scientific, Lennar Homes, iGo Cars, and United Airlines.

Wanting to further his people management and operations skills, he took a position at McMaster Carr as an internal consultant and team manager.

Gabe left there to pursue an MBA and masters of engineering from Kellogg but dropped out to pursue IncentFit, a startup that pays people to exercise.

This week I welcome Kaleigh Wiese on the show to discuss marketing with SnapChat. Kaleigh is the founder and CEO of Garment Exchange, a fresh startup in the fashion industry.

They are the first community driven peer-to peer marketplace that allows women nationwide to rent their clothing.

Their target audience is 2-sided and ages span between 20-30 primarily. They launched in May of 2015, and have chosen to bootstrap completely. Approaching marketing was initially quite overwhelming with no budget.

However, they've gotten crafty and seen some great results using SnapChat.

For example they've used fun GeoFilters with a “sponsored by Garment-Exhange” graphic over locations where our potential users are located (localized fashion weeks, college sorority houses, women based events across the US, etc.)

We'll be discussing this strategy and more with Kaleigh this week as we talk about how SnapChat can benefit your business.

Cheryl made a conscious decision a year ago that she was going to get 25% of her Real Estate business from LinkedIn.
She's been a member since 2007 but never was an active member. That changed this past year when she began submitting posts and connected with others through LinkedIn groups.

She now meets with people weekly from LinkedIn, and is getting about 12 % of her business from LinkedIn. She recently closed on a $40 million dollar contract as a result of LinkedIn.

On this episode, I talk with Troy James author of "The Money Island".

When his book first came out, Troy asked his small publisher to only list his first name. This created a confusion, but it was marketing genius (one of the top agents called to say they admired his marketing).

Facebook refused to give Troy an official author page, rather unofficially linking him to the movie "Troy".

Finally giving in, Facebook gave Troy an official page.

He then issued a press release to announce that Facebook finally realized that Brad Pitt and Troy are not the same person. Brad Pitt was in a movie called "Troy" but he was Troy.

Yahoo picked it up and he was trending for a day creating book sales.

He has now gotten the attention of Hollywood which was the plan all along.

Troy will be leaving next week for Belgrade, Serbia for an international book fair and will be booked.

This week, I chat with Christopher J. Lynch, a self published author of the successful series called "One Eyed Jack". With an eye toward not only selling more books, but also as a vehicle to catch the eye of Hollywood, Christopher created a very advance video trailer for his book.

Most book trailers are essentially a slide show set to music and maybe with some voice over thrown in. Christopher really wanted to plant a seed with his book trailer, and created one that looks like the opening scene in a movie or TV show.

The final video took two days to shoot, and cost Christopher about $2000, but it was money well invested. Not only has Christopher sold lots of books based upon people seeing the trailer, the debut novel in the series has been optioned by a Hollywood production company, and is currently in pre-production to be adapted to a feature length film.

Not bad for an indie author with his first novel!

This week, I welcome Jim Gast founder of SpliceNet, to discuss how to create uncontested market space By targeting a niche industry.

SpliceNet is an IT consulting company with a legal vertical niche.

One of their primary focuses is on serving law firms.

As Jim discusses on the show, he and his team learned over time that it wasn’t good enough to be the best, they needed to be the ONLY.

In order to corner the legal niche, they made strong relationships with local lawyer bar, paralegal and legal administrator associations and engaged the community not by selling but through education.

This has been the key to their success.

This week I interview Gene Caballero of Green Pal - a company that connects homeowners with pre-screened local lawn professionals and provide lawn pros with an easy way to find new customers, schedule appointments, and get paid after each cut.
On this interview, Gene will be sharing one of their biggest marketing strategies that has helped to grow their business to $1 million in gross revenue this year.

They decided to target customers with pets. After buying $100 worth of dog bones and cat nip, they started sending these out to customers, thanking them for their business and giving them their Yelp link of course.

After a few trips to the post office, they saw the emails and Yelp reviews skyrocket!
